Applied mathematics is a diverse discipline whose breadth of coverage and intrinsic, implicit involvement in numerous fields of quantitative endeavour is belied by its simple name. From a descriptive point of view, applied mathematics is about representing real-world problems in a mathematical framework, typically as systems of differential equations, applying classical and novel methods of solution, computation and analysis in order to extract detailed information from, and broader insight into the problems under consideration
This is by its nature a collaborative activity, with numerous current exciting projects being undertaken with emphasis ranging from industrial, resources and energy to biomedical and biomechanical applications. Underpinning such collaborative and applied research is the maintenance and extension of a strong technical or theoretical background in the mathematical sciences of continuum mechanics and dynamical systems.
